Ice pans that have just broken off of the shorefast ice shelf float on on Inglefield Fjord, near Qeqertarsuaq Island, outside the village of Qaanaaq, Greenland in May 2023. This type of broken ice is uncommon in the Arctic, and only exists in areas of little or no wind. The region in Inglefield Sound is habitable despite its extreme northern latitude because of its favorable weather and proximity to Pikialasorsuaq (North Water Polynya), and its proliferation of wildlife.
